Physics of Cycling :: physics sport sports cycle bicycle
Almost the entire spot of cycling is based on physics. Some aspects are obvious, like torque and other basic forces, although others do not come to mind as easily. Things like aerodynamics are playing an increasingly larger role in the sport, along with other things like damped harmonic motion (think mountain bike suspension), and efficiency. A lot of the detailed things would be beyond this paper, but the basics, which are the most import parts, will be talked about. Torque is what makes the wheels on the bike go round. Great research has been but into the sport in order to figure out how to increase the torque applied by the rider to the rear wheel, wile decreasing the torque required to make the wheel turn. Torque is produced the rider using a device called a crank. The torque in the series of parts that drive the bicycle forward (called the drive train) is dependant on the size of the chain ring (the large gears mounted on the crank) being used, and the size of the rear cog being used. When the chain is on the smaller chain ring, the force through the chain must be greater because the chain ring is closer to the axis of rotation and must apply a larger force to equal the torque produced by the pedals. Likewise, if a larger cog is used in back on the wheel, an larger torque is exerted on the wheel, and so produces a larger forward force at the tire. These higer-torque gears are good for climbing, where large forward forces are need at low speeds, but for flats and downhills, different gearing is needed, because the lower gearing does not provide much forward rotation (the rear wheel will not rotate as much for a single stroke of the pedal). Detail of the drive train on a bicycle. The smaller the gear on the crank combined with a large gear on the wheel will produce large amounts of torque and large forward forces. Work and Power Although torque does have a lot to do with the bike and how it works, professionals and people in the know don't usually refer to torque the rider applies to the wheels. Usually, they'll talk about power. This makes much more sense, because cycling, in general, is a sport that requires you exert yourself for a relatively long amount of time, instead of just trying to exert the largest force you can (this isn't weight lifting).
Romeo and Juliet Essay -- Literary Analysis, Shakespeare
Physical separation is a powerful obstacle that is sometimes faced by those bound to each other in love. It brings about intense emotional pain and can hinder any relationship with which true love is at its core. Shakespeareââ¬â¢s Sonnet 56 involved two lovers that experienced physical separation as a stumbling block in their kinship. The ââ¬Å"sad interimâ⬠with which the lovers found themselves suffering caused the intensity of their love to vanish. With their love fading quickly, the two desired for ââ¬Å"sweet loveâ⬠to ââ¬Å"renew thy force.â⬠They wanted their love for each other to be ââ¬Å"blunter be than appetite, / Which but today by feeding is allayed, / Tomorrow sharpened in his former might.â⬠They wished for a love like hunger, constantly returning and needing to be quenched. However, due to their separation, the peopleââ¬â¢s ââ¬Å"spirit of loveâ⬠had become ââ¬Å"a perpetual dullness.â⬠The ââ¬Å"hungry eyesâ⬠of their love would ââ¬Å"wink with fullnessâ⬠and had lost its potency and strength. In order to repair the love that had waned, the lovers longed to ââ¬Å"Come daily to the banksâ⬠of the ocean so that the ââ¬Å"Return of loveâ⬠could come to their relationship, and they desired ââ¬Å"this sad interimâ⬠to be ââ¬Å"winter, which being full of care / Makes summerââ¬â¢s welcome thrice more wishââ¬â¢d.â⬠Sonnet 56 was a sad story in which separation caused two peopleââ¬â¢s love to become dull and boring. The obstacle of separation was also evident in the relationship between Hero and Claudio found in the play, Much Ado About Nothing. At the beginning of the play, Don Pedro and some of his men returned to Messina after battling in war. One of the men that Don Pedro brought with him was young Claudio. Claudio was highly respected in the eyes of Don Pedro and had exceptional war performan... ...(RJ 3. 5. 197). Juliet was so disgusted with the thought of marrying Paris that she would rather ââ¬Å"make the bridal bed / In that dim monument where Tybalt liesâ⬠(RJ 3. 5. 212-213). Out of desperation to prevent the wedding, Juliet went ââ¬Å"to the Friar to know his remedyâ⬠(RJ 3. 5. 254). She told that Friar that she ââ¬Å"long[s] to die / If what thou speakââ¬â¢st speak not of remedyâ⬠(RJ 3. 5. 67-68). The Friar provided Juliet with a poison that would cause ââ¬Å"The roses in [her] lips and cheeks fade / To paly ashes, [her] eyesââ¬â¢ windows fall / Like when he shuts up the day of lifeâ⬠(RJ 4. 1. 101-103). Though Paris was taken by Juliet, Juliet had no desire to marry Paris. Their love was completely one sided. Paris desired the love of Juliet but Juliet did not grant the love in return. The obstacle of non-mutual love will prevent any relationship from being successful.

The End to Slavery in the Caribbean Essay -- Slavery Slave Racial Essa
The End to Slavery in the Caribbean The Haitian Revolution (1791-1804) was the first successful slave revolt in the Caribbean, and it was one of the most important events in the history of the Americas. Along with the obvious human rights benefits that the Haitian Revolution achieved, there were some serious setbacks for the nation as well. Between 1783 and 1789, Saint Domingue was the foremost sugar producer in the region, but by the end of the war the economy was completely destroyed, and to this day Haiti has not come anywhere close to reattaining its once prominent economic status in the Caribbean. The results of the revolution sent fear through the European consciousness as well as strengthened the growing idea that slavery may be an immoral practice. In the United Kingdom, slavery lost popularity quickly and an antislavery movement was initiated. After May 1807, no British ship was permitted to leave with a cargo of slaves, and by March 1808, it was made illegal for a slave to be landed in any British colony. The law became even stricter in 1811 when the trafficking of slaves was made into a felony. Despite the attempts to end the slave trade, plantation slavery continued in the British Caribbean. Slavery was not officially abolished in the Caribbean until 1834. The termination bill which abolished it called for twelve years of apprenticeship for the ââ¬Å"ex-slavesâ⬠, which was not very different from slavery. This system was abolished in 1838. During and after all of this vacillating lawmaking, a serious labor problem developed in the Caribbean. The key to the production of the Caribbeanââ¬â¢s produce, mainly sugar, was the system of slavery. Slavery practically eliminated labor costs, and all... ...s felt as though they were being undercut by this new type of cheap labor. The blacks resented that their slavery had come to an end, but in order to compete with the new labor force, slave-like conditions were once again the only option. The "cooliesâ⬠in Jamaica, as well as the Asians on the other islands began their journeys as outsiders living in terrible conditions. Today, a sort of blend has taken place in these cultures. A good example of the blending that has taken place can be seen in the music of the region. In rural Trinidad there is a popular form of music that mixes classical Indian singing with a soca beat. Soca is a music that combines the insistent tempos of calypso with the energy of hip hop and the quatrain-like structures of traditional north Indian folk songs. Tinker, Hugh. A New System of Slavery. Oxford University Press, 1974.

Issues in Multi Cultural Education
To date, only a handful of studies have empirically investigated the relationship between school locations and their constituencies. Taller. E. (2001). The students that are living in the low income areas of Richmond are more diverse than the ones that are living in the counties that surround the city. For instance, Houghton High School located in one of the low income areas of Richmond County has a Ninety Two Percent minority rate among there attending students. U. S. News and world report (2014).Fifty Six percent of the student population at Houghton High is economically disadvantaged. U. S. News and world report. (2014). Over half of the students that attend this high school receives free lunch. REV News. (2014). In 2013 while hosting the third annual white house science fair President Obama spoke on how one of his main focuses as president has been how to create an all-hands-on- deck approach to the STEM curriculum. The White House. (2014). This curriculum includes science, techn ology, engineering, and math. The White House. (2014).He also mentions how ââ¬Å"We need to make this a priority to train an army of new teachers in these subject areas, and to make sure that all of us as a country are lifting up these subjects for the respect that they deserve. â⬠The White House (2014). Right outside the Richmond County school district still located in Richmond State is Henries County. Located about 20 Minutes away from Houghton High is Deep Run High School which is part of the Henries County public school district.. Deep Run High School in contrast to Houghton High has a twenty percent minority rate.SKI 2 Guides (2014). The Majority of the students that attend Deep Run High School are white. KEY Guides (2014). Only about two percent of the students who attend this school participate in the free lunch program. KEY Guides (2014). These students also rank eighty nine percent in proficiency in math. U. S. News. (2014). The annual per pupil expenditure in Henrie s County Public Schools is 9,650 per pupil in 2013. Henries County Public Schools. (2014). The annual per pupil expenditure in Richmond County Public Schools is 11,218.Richmond County Public Schools. (2014). This proves that it the inequities do not lie in the shortage of money being provided by the local and federal funds. Individuals from families that are still together completed, on average, more years of school and are also more likely to graduate from high school, attend college, and complete college compared to students raised in blended or ingle-parent families. Family Facts (2014). Their parents have more involvement in their school activities and have higher expectations for them. Family Facts. 2014). The answer then to closing the gap on students' performance in school has to start with a program to inspire low income families to stay together and build a strong support system for one another to be successful. The Strengthening Families Program (SSP) is a nationally and i nternationally recognized parenting and family strengthening program for high-risk and regular families. Strengthening Families Program. (2014). This program teaches parents and students with broken home valuable skills that can increase their chances for success. It also has been shown to reduce problem behaviors, delinquency, and alcohol and drug abuse in children and to improve social competencies and school performance. Strengthening Families Program. (2014). Past research reported that teenage males from minority groups often engage more in high-risk behaviors at school such as weapon possession, gang involvement, and fighting than any other group. Marsh, T. Y. , & Cornell, D. G. (2001). The Strengthening families program's take home DVD had ten thirty minute sessions for parents and students to watch together. These DVD's can be viewed at the discretion of the family preferably once a week. The Strengthening Families Program is an excellent tool to use to help aid in situations where families are in low income single parent or poverty stricken situations. Grappling with the issues of equity and excellence has become ever more complex solutions seem more and more remote as the divides between socioeconomic groups become greater and greater, and ethnic diversity of the student population continues to present ever-increasing stress on the educational system. Callahan, C. M. (2003).Because of inequalities students that attend school in Henries, Chester field and surrounding counties are receiving a higher level of education than the students that attend school in certain parts of Richmond. Whether or not they are income based, minority based, or Just lack of good parenting. The fact still remains that there is a dish connect between students that are being raised in such a close proximity. How can people on one side of the tracks sit around and watch students on the other side of the tracts do so poorly in school? This problem is deeply rooted in the community as well as in the individual family unit.Through the implementation of people that care and some programs that could aid in recovery one day we will all be able to stand hand and hand and succeed as a whole.

Business Ethics Within Today
Business Ethics within Todayââ¬â¢s Business See Yang University of Phoenix Business Ethics within Todayââ¬â¢s Business Ethics are very important to all business people. Yet, many neglect ethics as an important part that plays a major impact upon a personââ¬â¢s success as a leader or advisor. Ethical dilemmas are faced everyday in the society. Which in todayââ¬â¢s business world ethical issues like harassment, conflict of interest, and customer confidence issues does affects the community and organization. Business ethics is not something that naturally occurs within an organization. Itââ¬â¢s a culture that upper management and employees need to build from the ground up, which helps the company to tackle moral issues confronting the business. Therefore, business ethics examines ethical principles and moral or ethical problem that arise in a business environment, which applies to all aspect of business conduct and are relevant to the conduct of individuals and business organizations all together (Trevino & Nelson, 2007). However, business ethics creates professional attitudes and behaviors throughout the organization and the surrounding environment. In todayââ¬â¢s business world, harassment is not taken lightly. Harassment or sexual harassment is sexual behavior toward another person with unwanted contact with the other person. Harassment is not when two people come together and kiss but when someone is making rude comments or trying to have sexual contact with another person without permission. Because harassment is a form of discrimination harassment is an ethical issue that stops workers from performing their duties due to miss treatment and unfairness (Trevino & Nelson, 2007). Another ethical issue is conflicts of interest. Conflict of interest includes issues as bribes, influence and privileged information. For example, if an individual was working for a retail company and was also employed by another retail company at the same time would be consider a conflict of interest. Due to valuable information the individual holds about the company, therefore the company would expect the individual to quit or look for another job. Conflict of interest can also occur by holding a personal relationship with another co-worker and distributing irregular discounts to other vendors when the discount is meant just for the worker. As a company, avoiding conflict of interest is the best way to go. Conflicts could cause loss of employment and corporation or law and federal charges. Customer confidence issues are another ethical issue. It includes topics such as confidentiality and truth in advertising. Confidentiality is basically the privacy of the customer. The privacy protects the customerââ¬â¢s personal information on sales and finance. As an employee, truth in advertising plays a huge role in customer service. If an employee is promoting something and is not promoting the proper information, the company could lose a substantial amount of money depending on the situation. As well as losing customers and business. Customer confidence has a saying, ââ¬Å"the customer is always rightâ⬠(Trevino & Nelson, 2007). Most businesses use the saying to prevent tension between the corporation and the customer and provide customer satisfaction. Harassment, conflict of interest, and customer confidence issues are some of the business ethical issues, which are common in everyday business. An individual can make a single decision that can have a negative or positive effect around his or her surroundings. Businesses make the choices through being honest or lying. However, it will determine what fate the business would fall in. A business who values work ethics would be a business valued by the customers. Reference Trevino, L. K. , & Nelson, K. A. (2007). A Critical Analysis Of ââ¬ÅThe Story Of An Hourââ¬Â Essay
A critical analysis of ââ¬Å"The Story of an Hourâ⬠Kate Chopinââ¬â¢s ââ¬Å"The Story Of An Hourâ⬠, in my opinion, is a good piece of literature. It is well written, clearly written, entertaining, and it brings a bit of a challenge to the reader. Starting with the title, Chopin described part of the setting. We already know that everything that happens during this little drama, happens within an hour. This title brought curiosity upon me because I did not realize that many things that could affect oneââ¬â¢s life could take place in an hour. For example, the recent tragedy in America, within one hour much had happened in the borders of the United States and Chopinââ¬â¢s choice of title brought that to my attention, within an hour much could happen that could completely change someoneââ¬â¢s life. The way the story is written is very straightforward. The author tells you exactly what is happening but still leaves enough room for your imagination to fill in the blanks. For example, when Chopin describes Louiseââ¬â¢s room with ââ¬Å"the open window, a comfortable, roomy armchairâ⬠(page 378), and then goes on to describe what Louise sees outside, she tells us that our protagonist isnââ¬â¢t living a bad life monetarily. Louise has a nice comfortable chair in her bedroom where she has a nice view of a square with trees and people. The way Chopin describes the weather follows the same suit. ââ¬Å"There were patches of blue sky showing here and there through the cloudsâ⬠à ¦in the west facing her windowâ⬠(page 378). The author tells you what to imagine but there is still room for you to add, for example, the sun shining through the clouds and warmly hitting her face, among other things. The language used was also good. It wasnââ¬â¢t the usual complicated Shakespearean English, it was, if you will, a more updated version of it. Because she used Modern English, it was easier to follow and understand, I didnââ¬â¢t have to stop and figure out what a certain word meant. At the same time, it is not to say that the piece was poorly written. In many instants as I read it I noticed the way it flowed so well and how beautiful it sounded. The description Chopin gives of Louise sitting on the chairà describes it best. ââ¬Å"She sat with her head thrown back upon the cushion of the chair, quite motionless, except when a sob came up into her throat and shook her, as a child who has cried itself to sleep continues to sob in its dreams.â⬠(Page 378). Simple, yet deep. Throughout the whole story I didnââ¬â¢t really have an urge to stop reading it. Chopin kept me there reading along because I was curious to know more about how Louise felt and if she was going to be ok since it was mentioned that she had heart problems. The story was very entertaining although short. I believe that even if Chopin had dragged on a little more I still wouldââ¬â¢ve read it right through. Louise showed some strange signs upon receiving the news of her husbandââ¬â¢s death. It can even be said that Chopin intended for the audience to think that Louise might have had something to do with her husband Brentlyââ¬â¢s death. And Richards might have been involved too. As the news were received at the newspaper office, Richards was already there waiting for it and didnââ¬â¢t leave until a second telegram had been sent confirming the death of his friend. The fact that she ââ¬Å"wept at onceâ⬠(Page 378) also shows some kind of possible involvement, perhaps a fake cry scene was put here just so her sister would see that she was upset about her husbandââ¬â¢s death. It is mentioned that she while sitting on her chair she sank ââ¬Å"pressed down by a physical exhaustion that haunted her body and seemed to reach into her soul.â⬠(Page 378). That to me sounds a bit like guilt, the use of the work ââ¬Å"hauntedâ⬠shows that this is a negative feeling. Once Chopin starts to describe Louise, ââ¬Å"She was young, with a fair face, whose lines bespoken repression and even a certain strength.â⬠(Page 378), that could be describing the repression that she felt because of her husbandââ¬â¢s attitude towards her. ââ¬Å"It was not a glance of reflection, but rather indicated a suspension of intelligent thought.â⬠(Page 378), this sentence tells me that she hasnââ¬â¢t been logically thinking anymore, it also helps to show that perhaps she did have some kind of involvement on her husbandââ¬â¢s death, not being able to cognitively solve her problems with him. She is waiting for a feeling, maybe it is guilt from what she has done and when it says that she would fight this feeling back it is because she doesnââ¬â¢t want to feel guilty. And later on this feeling is calledà a monstrous joy. The cries of freedom also help my observations come true, she had a reason to do it, she wanted to be free of her husbandââ¬â¢s ways. Once her husband opens the door, she screams and has a heart attack, she was not expecting to see him ever again, she was filled w joy until the moment she saw him alive. Perhaps she is guilty of trying to kill her husband. The confusing challenging part comes when Richards tries to get in the way of Louiseââ¬â¢s sight so she is not able to see Brently. I donââ¬â¢t understand it, what does it mean? Did Richards maybe tell Brently to do something else rather than take this train trip but did not tell him that the train ââ¬Å"accidentâ⬠was to occur? Maybe it is so and he was trying to not allow Louise to see Brently because Richards and Louise had planned it all and he backed out on it. Maybe Louiseââ¬â¢s intention was to be with Richards after her husband died. After reading the story several times this is my interpretation. It is a very good story that could have many meanings, this being one of them. Evil, or Louiseââ¬â¢s desire to kill her husband, failed once again because of Good, or Richards strong friendship with Brently. What are the effects of childrens various nagging strategies on their parents?
The trend for advertisers to target children rather than adults has several reasons behind it. The first reason is associated with the fact that during the 1980s working parents had less time to spend with their children and tried to substitute emotional connection with buying more things for their offsprings. It was the era when children emerged as an important category of consumers. The second reason is advertisersââ¬â¢ attempt to develop brand loyalty among their future customers from the early age. Children have been reported to recognize brand logos before they are able to speak their name. Advertisers reckon that nostalgic memories from childhood will propel consumers to buy their brand as grownups. The third reason for the focus on children is associated with effectiveness of nagging strategies children use to make their parents buy products they want. There are seven nagging strategies children employ, as identified by James U. McNeal, the author of the book ââ¬ËKids as Customers. ââ¬â¢ The first strategy is referred to as a pleading nag and implies repeating words like ââ¬Ëpleaseââ¬â¢ or ââ¬Ëmomââ¬â¢ until the child gets what he or she wants. The second strategy, a persistent nag, is based on requesting the desired object over and over again. It may include phrases like ââ¬ËIââ¬â¢m gonna ask just one more time. ââ¬â¢ The third form of pressurizing parents into buying certain products is a forceful nag that may involve threats and other pushy statement. The child may threaten to ask Dad instead thus playing on the motherââ¬â¢s willingness to be the most loves out of two parents. The forth strategy is a demonstrative nag ââ¬â the most dangerous scenario characterized by scandals in public places, crying, refusing to walk out of the shop, breath-holding, and similar tactics. The fifth strategy is labeled a sugar-coated nag and relies on promising love and recognition in return for the desired object and may involve such phrases as ââ¬ËYouââ¬â¢re the best parent ever. ââ¬â¢ The sixth strategy, a threatening nag, implies some forms of blackmailing, running away or vows of eternal hatred. The last form of a nag called a pity nag includes the child telling his or her parents that he or she will be immensely sad or socially stunted if the desired object is not purchased. All these tactics can be used in combination and can have a varying effect on parents. Quite often, these nagging strategies prove to be as effective as advertisers think them to be. There are several reasons for that. First of all, many parents are very busy nowadays, and it is easier for them to purchase a certain thing than to spend half an hour on persuading their child that the purchase would be unnecessary or undesirable. The second reason is that unfortunately, many parents do not connect well to their children and fail to establish a relationship of trust with them that is needed for reaching compromises or explaining which purchases are necessary and which are not. Young parents or single parents may simply lack communication and explanatory skills to avoid giving in to nagging. The third reason is that some parents believe that consumption is happiness and socialize their children into consumerism from the early age. Well-to-do and permissive parents are likely to supply their children with excessive amounts of unnecessary things. The fourth reason why parent give in to nagging is the societyââ¬â¢s view that children should always get what they want. Increased attention to childrenââ¬â¢s right and eliminating child abuse make the society disapprove of parents that do not fulfill every wish of their children. Trying to avoid being labeled as a ââ¬Ëbad parent,ââ¬â¢ mothers and fathers prefer to buy the desired object not to be criticized by passersby or community members. The effectiveness of nagging strategies provides a rationale for continuing focus on children. This may have undesirable consequences, since advertisers often do not follow ethical standards in their attempt to maximize profits. People often say that advertising is intrusive, deceptive and manipulative. Therefore, it is ethically wrong to target children as prime consumers of advertising content. Unlike adults, children are incapable of distinguishing between advertising content and other television production. Furthermore, children may fall prey of commercials for alcohol and cigarettes. Marketing research into the likes and dislikes of children may interrupt their leisure activities and socializing. While buying decisions rests with adults, children are getting more and more power in shaping their parentsââ¬â¢ consumption patterns though nagging. A conclusion can be made that parents should learn how to deal efficiently with their childrenââ¬â¢s nagging strategies and make more independent buying decisions. Advertising aimed at children should be limited and controlled by public authorities. While consumerism remains a questionable virtue, it may be wrong to socialize children into consumerist values before they are able to make informed decisions of their own.
